"Kuranda" The Village in the sky!
Cuddly Koala's, Barron Falls, Scenic Railway and Skyrail Gondola's.
Always a highlight with a visit to Cairns in Far North Queensland is Kuranda! Bookings are essential to get the most from your Scenic Railway / Skyrail Adventure. We offer a 5% discount when we book your tickets for you!
Judy and I quite often travel there ourselves on the
Kuranda Scenic Railway from Redlynch Station, past Barron Falls, through numerous tunnels to Kuranda Station, One of the prettiest stations we have ever seen! We have always been thrilled at the various flowers and birds we see when we alight from the carriage! The scenery from this train is stunning, with running commentry by loud speaker, and the most courteous friendly staff!
Once in Kuranda I need to steer Judy away from all the shops, to head straight to the Koala Park and Venom Zoo or Butterfly House! But Judy always seems to find a shop somewhere to grab a nice little something! The excuse is always---"It WILL look good in the Rooms"!!
Australian Butterfly Sanctuary
The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is the largest butterfly flight aviary and exhibit in Australia - a quality wildlife park in the heart of Kuranda Village.
Situated next to the Kuranda markets, The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is home to over 1500 magnificent tropical butterflies that are hand reared on the premises.
All are local rainforest species, including an iconic Kuranda butterfly, the electric blue Ulysses Butterfly, and the majestic fluoro green and yellow Cairns Birdwing.

Kuranda Koala Gardens is Kuranda's newest wildlife attraction! Situated in the heart of Kuranda, this attraction gives you the opportunity to see some of Australia's most unique wildlife up close.
Kuranda Venom Zoo! Snakes! Spiders & Scorpions!
All sorts of great fun things? At the Australian Venom Zoo our primary focus is on captive breeding and displaying venomous animals that will one day be responsible for producing some of the most advanced medicines in the world. The majority of animals we have here are unique to Australia and in some cases have never before been seen. We believe that the education of the general public is an essential step in understanding the importance of Australia's venomous animals.
When we have had enough FUN in Kuranda we take the quiet, comfortable
Kuranda Skyrail back to the base of the mountain to meet the bus to take us back to Redlynch Station. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, is a world first in environmental tourism taking you on an amazing experience over Australia’s World Heritage listed Tropical Rainforest canopy and deep into the forest.
Skyrail spans over 7.5kms of pristine rainforest, allowing you to explore the wonders of an ancient tropical rainforest and learn about one of the most botanically fascinating and diverse areas on earth. Gliding just metres above the rainforest canopy in comfortable six-person gondola cabins, the journey immerses you in an intimate rainforest experience where you’ll see, hear, smell and become part of the tropical rainforest nvironment.
We often get of at Caravonica or Barron Falls Stations to walk around the Rainforest No we can't get enough Rainforest!
Koala Photos: Take the opportunity to 'Cuddle a Koala' and receive a great souvenir digital photo (extra cost). Kuranda Koala Gardens is one of only a handful of places in the world where you can actually cuddle a koala. Our adherence to a strict "Government Code Of Practice" ensures the health and wellbeing of our furry friends.
Freshwater Crocodiles: Another Australian native - perhaps not as endearing as the Koala but a fascinating part of the eco system, is the Freshwater Crocodile. This is one of the two Australian saurians - the other being the Saltwater Crocodile. The Saltie does not function well in the cooler climes of the mountain regions but is on display at Cairns Tropical Zoo and Hartley's Crocodile Adventures.
Kangaroos & Wallabies: Australia has a large variety of these macropods and you will see swamp wallabies, parma wallabies, eastern grey kangaroos and red legged pademelons amongst others.
Snakes: Australia is home to many snakes, both deadly and harmless. Enjoy a unique 'up close' experience with pythons when you enter their domain in Australia's first 'Walk Through Snake House'.
Wombats: This quaint marsupial is an Australian favourite. They are often playful and quick to learn. However, as they sleep quite a lot, their intelligence is often underestimated! They lay claim to being the world's largest burrowing animal and can dig up to two metres of burrow in one night.
Lizards, Monitors and other Reptiles: Australia is home to an amazing selection of reptiles and there are lots on display. See Dragons and Monitors with their long forked tongues, and much more. Many of these creatures have great camouflage techniques - see what you can spot in their enclosure!
