Walks throughout the DaintreeFirstly we would suggest to start with a visit to the multi award winning DAINTREE DISCOVERY CENTRE 600 metres from the Retreat. Here you can begin your adventure into the Australian Wet Tropics and Great Barrier Reef. Information abounds, and they have diplays of Reptiles, Birds and Bugs. Remember to call into the Retreat to recieve your 10% discount voucher!!
We are lucky to have an active Department of Natural Resources who have installed many easily accesible boardwalks with self guided information. These walks are free and often even better after a visit to the Discovery Centre! Self Guided walks include JINDALBA, typical wet tropics lush rainforest, a great place to see the Southern Cassowary and only 900 metres from the Retreat. MARDJA located 8 Klms north of the Retreat is an excellent walk through lowland Rainforest along a clear mountain fed stream, which flows into the Coral Sea. The blue waters of the estuary hold, Turtle, Stingray, Barramundi, Archer Fish and at low tide you can see mudskippers and mud crabs of all colours among the Mangrove roots. A little further up the road is DUBUJI, a lovely walk through magnificent Fan Palm groves and then along the Beach. Be prepared to take lots of photographs of the stunning scenery! If you like to do some Beach combing there are some pristine seldom visited Beaches where we love to walk along early in the morning. A very special time to spend with someone special. CAPE KIMBERLEY BEACH and MYALL BEACH have all had their fare share of marriage proposals! As well as arguments on who is going to carry all the shells!! More energetic walks are the spectacular, and very aptly named MOUNT SORROW RIDGE TRACK and the BUMPY TRACK. The scenery is spectacular to say the least, take your time to soak it all up! Of coarse no visit to the Wet Tropics would be complete without a walk around MOSSMAN GORGE (fee) where there is also a great indigenous cultural centre. There is something quite special about walking the Rainforest at NIGHT with an experienced guide. Some of the guides here have been prowling the night with lanterns for many years, and are quite passionate to share the wilds of the worlds oldest Rainforest with you! We can book the very best of these guides for you, and have them as part of our specials! |
